These are very generic in nature and cover all modes and aspects of travelling.

  • Learn to pack your baggage light & smart. You can wear trousers two days in a row or more. The less you have to carry, the happier you will be travelling. Pack as per the location so that you do not carry unnecessary clothes with you.
  • Keep a change of clothes and basic toiletries in your carry-on baggage so you do not have to open the main baggage when you are on the move.
  • It’s better to carry a hard copy map of the city that you’re going to and save your phone charge for when you really need it.
  • Inform your family/friends about your travel plan as a backup. It will also help your family to find you in the event of a disaster.
  • If possible, always try to carry identity proof of all the travelers.
  • Do not keep all your cash at one place and keep an emergency stash of money. If you lose your wallet you will still need to eat. Also, make sure that your bank cards work and such facilities are also available at the place that you are going to. A card without an ATM facility is useless.
  • Carry baby wipes, face wipes, tissues & sanitizers. These are very useful tools for keeping yourself clean and fresh.
  • Grocery stores are a traveler’s best resource to get cheap food and local flavours. Find the nearest one to your hotel and you will save yourself a heap of cash.
  • Always keep a stash of spare plastic bags for dirty clothes, shoes & socks.  Smelly socks will make your clean clothes stink.
  • Wash your clothes in the sink or shower instead of looking for a laundry. Carry a little sized bottle of laundry detergent with you or buy it from local grocery store.
  • Always inquire from hotel staff about the place, driving direction, taxi fares, etc.
  • You should learn how to say “No thank you, please leave us alone”.
  • Always be prepared with mosquito repellent.
  • Always be aware of the market timings. If it’s a remote location it may be possible that the market shuts down quite early and you are left with nothing to eat or drink.
  • You should always carry comfortable walking footwear.
  • Ask the locals for advice & tips. The best beach probably isn’t the most popular one. The locals can help you find those secret spots you will rave about.
  • The same applies to the restaurant as well. Eat where the locals eat. Ask the locals where they eat. Go there instead.
  • Always be aware of the local rules, taxes, levies, & road rules. Pay respect to them.
  • Learn to take decent photographs. With passage of time memories fade and you’ll want something to remember the moment.
